What is eSports?

  • eSports (electronic sports) refers to competitive video gaming where professional players and teams compete in organised tournaments across various game genres.

  • The eSports industry is one of the fastest growing industries globally and in Australia. The global eSports market was valued at $2 billion in 2025 and Australia's eSports market was valued at $145.2 million in 2025 and is forecasted to reach $246.73 million by 2032.

  • Over 14 universities in Australia now offer specialised eSports programs, with 27 institutions having eSports clubs and direct partnerships with national and global eSports organisations.

  • In a recent national survey, 86% of Australian’s aged 15-24 play video games, stream or watch eSports content on social media and online.

  • 33% of young Australians would be interested in a career in eSports and 45% of them are enthusiastic about the prospect of working in eSports, but unsure about career pathways.
    Career Opportunities in eSports

  • Beyond professional gaming careers, eSports offers careers in broadcasting, coaching, event management, marketing, game development, and content creation (streaming, casting, and analytics). In addition, the eSports industry’s rapid growth requires broader expertise in corporate and back-office functions, technology, media and software development.
